What is on the other end of a hostname, read from the CNAME it points at.
This is a narrower question than who hosts a company and a different one
from which vendors it has declared: a company can sit on AWS at the
network level while one particular hostname is served by Optimizely, or Salesforce, or its own
content delivery estate. A CNAME says which, and says it in public DNS.
146 of
161 companies with any CNAME record resolve to at least one
identified platform. Each square below is one company; hover it for the name.
By platform
Two counts, because they say different things. Companies is how widely a
platform is used across the index; hostnames is how heavily — one company can point
a hundred hostnames at a single CDN, which is not the same fact as a hundred companies each
pointing one.

“Self-hosted” is a finding, not a gap.
A hostname pointing at the company's own domain — a CDN tier, a global load balancer, an
internal proxy it runs itself — is a real answer about how that company operates, and one
worth separating from a platform we simply could not identify. Those genuinely unidentified
targets are listed below rather than quietly dropped.
Unidentified targets
CNAME targets matching no rule and belonging to no company in this catalogue.
Published rather than hidden, because an honest count of what a method misses is part of the
method — see coverage.
Every record here was resolved from a public DNS resolver, which never touches the
company's own infrastructure. Nothing was fetched from the CNAME target and nothing is inferred
from page content: a hostname pointing at dxcloud.episerver.net is recorded as
Optimizely because that is Optimizely's own service domain, not because the page looked like it.
